Bulldogs Tackle Tigers and Weather
The River Bend Football teams took on the Byron Tigers and the weather last Saturday. After an outstanding patriotic rendition of the National Anthem by Coach Larry Jones that pumped up everyone in attendance, the junior Bulldogs played a strong first half with Byron scoring on the last play. The anticipated rain storm arrived and play was stopped. Unable to play on Steamer Field due to turf concerns, the remainder of the games were moved to Byron on Sunday. The 7th grade completed their contest with a 20-0 defeat. The 7th grade Bulldogs of the Week (left) are Devin VanZuiden on defense and Kraig Schipper for offense. The 8th grade followed with a tough 42-12 loss. Our 5th grade dogs came away with a 12-12 tie against the pesky tigers. In very hot conditions, the 6th grade wrapped up the day with a big win. The overcast skies continued during the 8th grade contest but the game was far from gloomy. The 8th grade hounds battled hard all game and found themselves trailing in the second half. The senior Bulldogs rallied and tied the score late at 22. Kewanee was not able to score and the game ended in a tie. During the overtime River Bend needed a score and conversion to win after Kewanee’s score. On two outstanding plays back to back, the Bulldogs powered to an exciting 30-28 win. The 8th grade Bulldogs of the Week are Kyle Schipper for offense and Eli Pannell for defense. The older Bulldogs face Byron Saturday at home.
